Those Pesky Dvd's
Apparently a stack of dvd's made it to the shelf with the dvd's included. We've found one that the dvd had already been stolen out of the sleeve named Donnie Darko. I'm not sure if it was just that one or if there are more but I've been asked to ask you to please pay more attention and make sure that when you're shelving a set of dvd's double check that the dvd's are not in the cases. Thank you most awesomest of pages. (Yes I know I misspelled that word horribly.)
By the way I'm working on planning the next page meeting. I'm thinking the same day as D&D might work well for it, so it will probably be in the auditorium December 17th at noon. I'll have to get it ok'd by the higher-ups first though so I'll post more info on that later.

Shelving assignments and meeting date
I have finished the shelving assignments. There are a few sections that are not assigned, such as the oversize books. Some areas are still for everyone to shelf read and shelve in. These areas are:
Audiovisual Materials (music, dvd's, audiobooks, etc)
Oversize books (circulating and non-circulating)
Reference books
Paperbacks
Storage
New books and rentals
I've based the sections on circulation statistics so some of them are broken up quite strangely. I've included the circulation numbers on your assignment sheet so you can see what I gave you and why I gave you what I did. I tried to go mostly by what you had requested earlier in your shelf reading list. Those were not set in stone, these are.
If you have problems with your sections including getting them finished please let me know. If you want to change sections with someone else, you both will have to come talk to me about it. I tried to make the areas as even as possible as far as circulation goes. Some of you may have bigger areas but those areas do not circulate as much. These sections are yours and yours alone, for now do not help each other shelve. If you run out of things to do there's always shelf reading and working in the unassigned areas.
These assignments will begin this Saturday, the 19th. That will also be the meeting date. I have a program that day as well so it will have to be a semi quick meeting, Camila I will have to catch you some other time. We will meet in the auditorium at noon this Saturday the 19th.
If you have questions/comments/complaints etc please let me know ahead of time so I can answer or address them as quickly and easily as possible during the meeting.

Meeting
Edit: Brain fart, i'm not even here on Mondays. I'll have to reschedule the meeting which unfortunately means It will be another week, probably the first week in December. Sorry Guys.
If there is anything in particular you want to discuss please send it to me through this blog, email, or leave a message for me in the folder at my desk. I also want all of you to re-read the page manual. I may just try to catch groups of you as I can and talk to you about things. I know it's not the best way to do things but with all our schedules being so crazy it might be the only way to do this.

Page Meeting and more gripes.
Be forewarned, there will be a mandatory page meeting soon so I can gripe at you in person. It will probably be next Saturday if no one has that day off already. I'll put more information about that up when I figure out when it is. Now on to the gripe!
If you put a cart together shelve it. Period. Do Not leave carts all over the place made up. If you don't have time to shelve a cart that you've made up then don't make the cart up, go shelf read or do something else. The only carts that I want to see that are already made up are fiction carts because there is no place else for them to go. Why you ask? Well because the carts on the second floor sit there for days and during that time nice patrons go along and decide to rearrange the books for us, or add or take books away making it almost useless to put them there in the first place. Then we have to go behind and put them in order again. Clean up carts are exceptions. It's OK if the sorting room has books in it. That's what it's for, to hold the books until you can get them shelved.
While I'm in a griping mood.... I also want to remind you that I expect each and every one of you to do your assigned tasks. I don't care if you don't like the first floor/second floor/children's shift, if you're assigned something on the first/second floor/children's shift, do it. That does not mean conning someone else into doing it for you.

Extra Hours Available and a small side rant...
Since Valerie is on Maternity Leave, and Oscar is going away for a few months, we have some hours we can allocate until they both return. I have 36 hours a week up for grabs. If you are interested in any of those let me know. I have to limit it to 10 per person. Some of this time will be spent in the teen center.
Also, when you do dvd's make sure you put away as much as you clean, and don't forget to do the audio-books as well. There are stacks up there that have been there for a while.
One more thing... This Saturday is Oscar's going away party and the birthday party day so if you want to bring goodies please do so.
Thanks for all your hard work :)

DVD's
Hi guys and gals, I've been thinking of changing dvd's around a little bit and making it like some of the other tasks. I was going to just assign dvd's during a shift instead of telling you exactly when to do them, like the rest of the tasks besides children's. What do you think about this? You should still spend an hour or so each time you're assigned dvd's but you can choose when to do them yourself. Or for those of you working 8 hour days you could split it up doing one hour in the morning and one in the evening or something like that. Also, next week is survey week so please be straightening today as you shelve, or just take a few minutes when you can and straighten wherever you are. Thank You!

One more thing...
Please Please Please pay attention to where you leave your walkie talkies. Cathy has been finding them all over the place and they are always dead. She found one up on the non-fiction shelves this morning, in the 900's. I don't want to have to start doing the check in/out sheet again but I will if I have to. So if this doesn't stop happening soon that's what I'll have to do.
Page Logs
Now that you've all had time to get used to doing your logs, I want to clarify some things. I've noticed some of you are doing great, others need a little more guidance. I'm going to give an example below but before I do, I want to remind/request you add some things to your log. Please add your days off, if they are not your normal days. For example if you have a Saturday off then in a couple of weeks I'm reading your log and you didn't put an entry for that Saturday I probably will not remember that you had that day off because I'm old and feeble minded. I also want to remind you to put your breaks in your log, what time you go on break and what time you come back. Keep count of how many carts you shelve or how many dvd's you clean/shelve. I count a cart to be full top rows on carts. Now... for the example of what to do!
Della's Pretend Page Day!
9:05 (5 minutes late couldn't find parking spot)
9:05-10:00 router 2nd floor
10:00-10:15 coffee break
10:15-11:00 cleaned 1 cart of dvd's
11:00-12:00 shelved 1 cart of dvd's
11:30 answered page call to front desk
12:00-1:00 put 1 non-fiction cart away
Della's Pretend Page Day 2!
5:00-7:00 Children's
7:00-7:15 break
7:15-8:00 dumped circ, put 1 fiction cart in order
8:00-8:30 shelved half the fiction cart
8:30-9:00 recovery (put rest of the fiction cart back along the wall outside sorting room)
These are examples, some of you are already doing this and more which is great! Some I'm not sure I was clear to when I spoke to you. Basically I want you to record everything and I want to know how long it took you to do it. When this is over I'll make all of you some goodies. Sarah I'll even try to make non-gluten stuff for you.. or maybe I'll bring you fruit :)
Also, some of you have told me you want to work club lib, so far I have Camila, Ryan, Josh, and Kim. If you want to work club lib and you haven't told me yet please do so this week. Now I need coffee... so in my log I would put break 10:34-10:49 and hope starbucks isn't busy :)

Stuff Galore!
I put up the new shelf reading assignments and I see some of you are already doing your sections. Good job! While I'm on the subject of assigned areas, please remember that you are all here to do the same job. You are all responsible for shelving, straightening, shelf-reading, and other tasks. With this being said, don't go off on someone for touching your section. You all know that sometimes you are tired of looking at your own section so you want a little break and go to another one to straighten, or you want to go hang out and talk to a friend while they do their section and you help them so you look like you're working and don't get in trouble, or even you walk by and randomly see lots of messy books so your ocd says FIX THE BOOKS NOW!
Anyway please be nice to each other. I know there is some tension between some of you. That's just the way things are, there will be clashes but you have to be the adults I know you are and get over it. There will always be issues with people you work with, now is as good a time as any to learn that you just have to deal with it and play nice until you leave for the day. There are also jobs that seem to be useless that someone else might think are important. Some of these monotonous unimportant jobs might even be assigned by us at some point. If you see someone doing something you think is unimportant, instead of suggesting they go 'work' perhaps you should ask a librarian first to see if maybe they are actually working on something they asked them to. Better yet, instead of assuming they are goofing off ask them why they are doing what they are doing, I'll bet they'll be happy to fill you in on the important job they are working on.
While I'm fussing, I also want to remind everyone that before they work on the fun jobs like writing, signs, or displays, everything else should be done. Circulation should be mostly empty, the sorting room should be empty, dvd's should be done, or at least shelved.
On to the next topic.... harassment in the workplace. There will be two training sessions that we are all required to go to, including you. These are Monday, September 26, from 2:00 - 4:30 and Wednesday, September 28, from 9:00 - 11:30. If you are here during that time you should go to one of them and I will schedule you to. If you don't make it there should be make-up sessions. If you don't normally work on Mondays and Wednesdays and can't change your schedule let me know. If you can change your schedule to come in for one of those sessions please do so and let me know what you are doing and where your hours will be taken from.
Speaking of Harassment, I want to remind you that you don't have to put up with patrons being nasty or suggestive to you. If you have a problem with someone let us know as soon as possible.
Ok /rant off. You're all awesome and I'm lucky to have such great pages. I'm always open to discussion if any of you want to talk about this stuff.

Recovery Laps
Hi guys I just wanted to remind you about doing the recovery laps at the beginning or end of your shifts, especially if you are assigned to do them. I know it's hard to fit it in sometimes but please if you're assigned to do a lap then do it. I'm also going to start working on the sections for shelf-reading. The shelves are starting to get in bad shape in places, especially fiction. If you have a preference of the section you want please let me know. Some of them I have a pretty good idea about but others I'm clueless. Thanks for all your hard work!

Open toe shoes
I've noticed lately that there have been instances of wearing open toed shoes. After much consideration and jabbering with the higher ups I have to keep the no open toe shoe rule. As much as I would like to say "oh go ahead and wear them, but don't come crying to me when you break your toe," I am not allowed to do that. So please follow the shoe rules, even though it's hot outside.

Mixed Carts
Hey everybody, someone told me yesterday about finding a couple of carts that were supposed to be in order, they had the signs on them but when they started to shelve them they had fiction and mystery books interfiled. Please pay attention and be careful when you are building carts. Make sure you have all fiction or all mystery.
We had to finish the time sheets early this week because of Labor Day so when you come to sign in and your time sheet has disappeared, don't panic. You won't have to sign in again until next Monday, August 29th. Should your schedule change this week to something besides what we turned in, those hours will have to be made up.

Labor Day Schedules
Please let me know if your schedule will change for the week of Labor Day. If you want to make up the hours for Labor Day get your schedule to me as soon as you can. Also I want to remind you that this is a public blog so please do not discuss patrons or other issues that should remain private on this blog.

DVD instructions
Ok so here's what everyone seems to agree on for DVD cleaning and shelving. (BTW Jen I'm stealing your notes on this.)
1. Sort dvds/cases by Genre
2. Put in order (A-Z; A on top)
3. Remove and clean/flap discs
4. Clean cases
5. Put clean cases and disks on cart, with discs on the top shelf and cases on the bottom.
6. Put the dvds and cases away (make sure you don't forget this part :P )
Notes:
* Genres need to stay together
* If there are a lot of stacks of the same genre they need to be divided into smaller stacks, however these smaller stacks should not be A-Z, but instead be divided into three sections. The first should be A-F, then G-N, and finally O-Z.
Jen commented to Josh that the reason she does this is:
It takes less time to make bigger piles. She collects the entire genre and then when sorting does the 2-3 sorting piles, and sort them into the smaller stacks and puts them in order. It also saves time when shelving in circulation.

Thanks Sarah for suggesting this (at least I think it was Sarah). We can discuss any page issues or questions you have on here.
