Recovery Laps

Hi guys I just wanted to remind you about doing the recovery laps at the beginning or end of your shifts, especially if you are assigned to do them. I know it's hard to fit it in sometimes but please if you're assigned to do a lap then do it. I'm also going to start working on the sections for shelf-reading. The shelves are starting to get in bad shape in places, especially fiction. If you have a preference of the section you want please let me know. Some of them I have a pretty good idea about but others I'm clueless. Thanks for all your hard work!

  1. As far as fiction is concerned I prefer to shelf read in mystery and large print, but would not mind fiction if I shared the section with someone else (say I had A-N and someone else had O-Z). With that said, I am fine shelving wherever there is a need for me!
As far as nonfiction is concerned I enjoy 000-500s. I wouldn't mind the cookbooks either!

  3. I would like to make a suggestion (that is not related to this posting...I just wanted to put it somewhere it would be seen since I don't think users can create their own posting on the blog) regarding our organization of fiction & non-fiction downstairs.
I understand the idea behind the current system, having fiction behind circulation and nonfiction in the sorting room, but I don't know that the system is effectively working. Because we are no longer allowed to put any fiction on shelving in the sorting room we are now running into the problem of many many carts full of fiction sitting unorganized in the sorting room. This is being done because fiction in circulation is filling up, and I completely understand WHY this is occurring. However, I feel like this is unnecessary and takes up carts/space.
I have a couple suggestions that I feel would make sorting more efficient and take up less space. The first suggestion is simple: go back to something similar to the old system. We can sort fiction AND non fiction in our sorting room. We could put another shelving unit where the young adult cart is, and move that to where the SC/Mystery/Storage cart used to be. I feel like right now everyone feels urged to make sure circ has barely any fiction, and it is resulting in carts and carts in the sorting room to keep the books out of sight out of mind.
Another suggestion, that I think makes more sense but is more work, would be to convert the second floor workroom into a non-fiction sorting room. This would eliminate the need to put tons of put together carts against the wall on the second floor (only to have them torn apart). We could rearrange the second floor work room (especially the shelf to the right of the sink) and find a new home for what is on the shelf and stick a large shelving unit there to sort books on. I feel like this would make the most sense because non-fiction essentially belongs on the second floor.

  4. Good suggestions in the above post. I second the suggestion that the second floor workroom serve as a holding place for carts. Is that locked room being used? Seems like an ideal place to me, but then, I don't know what exactly need it fulfills currently.
